Gold-Filled Metal: The Affordable Alternative to Solid Gold

Gold filled (or rolled gold) items have a solid brass core with a layer of gold mechanically bonded using heat and pressure. By law, they must contain 5% or 1/20 of gold by weight, typically 12K or 14K gold. Unlike gold plated items, which have a microscopic gold layer that can peel or flake, gold filled items have a much thicker gold layer, ensuring durability and longevity. All our gold filled findings are 14K.

Gold filled metal is a popular alternative to solid gold, offering many of the same benefits at a fraction of the cost. It is a high quality metal alloy that is made by bonding a layer of solid gold to a base metal such as brass or copper. The result is a durable and long lasting metal that has the same appearance as solid gold.

One of the biggest advantages of gold filled metal is its affordability. It is much more cost effective than solid gold, making it a great option for those who love the look of gold but don't want to spend a fortune. This is especially true for those who like to wear their jewellery every day, since gold filled metal is much more durable than gold plated metal and can withstand the wear and tear of daily use.

Another benefit of gold filled metal is its appearance. The layer of solid gold is thick enough that it can be polished to a high shine, making it virtually indistinguishable from solid gold. Additionally, gold-filled metal will not tarnish or fade, so it will keep its beautiful appearance for years to come. Gold filled metal is also a great option for those with sensitive skin, as it is hypoallergenic and does not contain any nickel, which is a common allergen found in other metal alloys.

Safety Note: Wearing Gold-Filled Metal Earrings

Gold-filled earrings are a popular and durable alternative to solid gold jewelry. However, it’s important to be aware of a few safety considerations:

Nickel Sensitivity: While gold-filled metal is generally hypoallergenic, some individuals with metal sensitivities may still react to the base metals (such as brass) used beneath the gold layer. If you have known metal allergies, consult with a dermatologist or test with caution.

Skin Irritation: Prolonged wear, especially in hot or humid conditions, may cause irritation for sensitive skin. Always clean your earrings regularly and avoid wearing them while sleeping, swimming, or during heavy sweating.

Proper Cleaning: Use only mild soap and water to clean gold-filled earrings. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the gold layer and potentially cause skin reactions.

Check for Damage: Inspect earrings for signs of wear, such as flaking or exposed base metal, which could increase the risk of irritation.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy your gold-filled earrings safely and comfortably.
